Green Water Sanitation and Hygiene

WASH stands for Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene, the project under Kitovu Mobile Limited is blended with environmental protection to create a comprehensive and sustainable initiative that addresses both environmental and public health concerns in the Grater Masaka region.

This project aims to improve water, sanitation, and hygiene services while protecting the environment in communities to enhance public health and well-being. By creating sustainable, community-led solutions, the project promotes the protection of water sources, construction and use of latrines, and the improvement of menstrual health and hygiene the project.

PROJECT COMPONENTS:

Protected Water Sources

Kitovu Mobile promotes the protection of water sources, including rainwater harvesting systems and efficient irrigation methods to conserve water and reduce waste. This has increased awareness and demand for improved WASH in the communities, schools now plan for the establishment, operation and maintenance of WASH facilities like pit latrines and incinerators. Through the formation of 10 household clusters in some communities of greater Masaka, improved sanitation, hygiene and environmental protection are being promoted.

Latrine Construction

The project supports and promotes the construction and use of latrines, including eco-friendly sanitation solutions, environmentally sustainable management of garbage and biogas systems, to reduce environmental impact, while maintaining proper sanitation and hygiene. The cluster-based initiative has empowered youths at the forefront of pit latrine use and water source cleaning, mobilizing construction materials for vulnerable and skipped generation households, and construction of handwashing facilities and drying racks.

Menstrual Health and Hygiene

A key component of the Green WASH Project is Menstrual Health and Hygiene for vulnerable girls that focuses on improved menstrual health and hygiene through educational campaigns, workshops, and training sessions, as well as the distribution of menstrual hygiene products. This has seen increase in the participation of youths, special needs persons and children in planning and decision-making regarding sanitation and environmental protection. This promotion of menstrual health and hygiene has seen increased number of girls in community activities that promote handwashing, toiled use and environmental conservation.

To further enhance menstrual health and hygiene, the Green WASH Project also focuses on improving menstrual hygiene management among vulnerable girls and youths in the region by;

  • Distributing reusable and disposable sanitary pads to vulnerable for girls and youths.
  • Creating awareness on menstrual hygiene management through educational campaigns, workshops, and advocating for integration of menstrual hygiene education sessions into educational curriculums.
  • Conducts dialogues and media campaigns to break down taboos and misconceptions regarding menstrual hygiene.
  • Promoting community awareness and involvement in environmental conservation through integration of environmental education and awareness.
  • Advocating and lobbying for government support and collaborating NGOs and international bodies to support related initiatives.

Kitovu Mobile also participates in Menstrual Hygiene Day celebrations on May 28th as a platform for raising awareness and combating stigma associated with menstruation, but also advocating for environmental protection.

Through the above Green WASH project in greater Masaka the project anticipates;

  • Distribution of Menstrual Hygiene Products like sanitary towels to vulnerable girls and youths.
  • Improved Public Health, through increased access to and adoption of WASH services and environmental conservation that can reduce water-borne diseases.
  • Reduced education absenteeism, increased confidence and dignity among girls and youths and empowerment of girls to manage menstruation.
  • Promotion of sustainable environmental practices, reducing pollution and conserving natural resources.
  • Engagement of the broader community in discussions about menstruation, breaking down taboos and misconceptions, and promoting community led solutions.
